Why lenders ask for a payslip and what they accept instead
A lender has to check that you can afford the loan, and the lenders on our online loans list each state what they ask for. The payslip is the usual proof of income, but not the only one. The National Credit Regulations (regulation 23A) tell the lender how to validate your gross income: for a salary, the latest three payslips or bank statements showing the latest three salary deposits; if you are not paid a salary, three documented proofs of income or three months of bank statements; and if you are self-employed, informally employed or paid in a way that gives you no payslip, three months of bank statements or the latest financial statements. Read the current text on the National Credit Regulator’s website.
Two more points from the same regulation. If your monthly income varies a lot, the lender must use the average over at least three pay periods before the application. And you must give authentic documents and disclose all your financial obligations. So the question is not “payslip or nothing”. It is which proof the lender accepts and whether it shows your income on the dates it looks at. The documents lenders ask for, side by side, are in loan requirements in South Africa.
A specific rule looks like this at Capfin (PEP loans): three latest payslips or three latest bank statements, but the applicant must also be permanently employed and earning a monthly salary (its FAQ, 28 Oct 2026). Statements can replace the payslip there; they do not replace the salary.

Self-employed, domestic and informal income: how it is assessed
What each of the five lenders on our list writes on its card (checked 18 and 19 Oct 2026). The table is in alphabetical order, not a ranking.
| Lender | Income proof on the card | Other documents |
|---|---|---|
| Century Apply | Last 3 months’ bank statements (3 salary deposits) | SA ID number, cellphone number, bank account details |
| Creditbar Apply | Last 3 months’ bank statements; a regular source of income | Valid SA ID, active phone number; SA citizen or permanent resident |
| Crediwise Apply | Latest 3 months’ bank statements | Valid SA ID, valid cellphone number |
| LendPlus Apply | Latest 3 months’ bank statements | Valid SA ID, valid cellphone number |
| Primeloans Apply | Latest 3 bank statements and a payslip | ID number and copy, proof of residence, cellphone number |
Four lenders ask for statements and list no payslip; only Primeloans adds one. No card describes self-employed, domestic or informal income by name, so “accepts the self-employed” is not something we can say for any of them. What the cards do show is that statements are the common proof, as regulation 23A says for people without a payslip. Century’s card says “3 salary deposits”, which suits regular pay into an account more than irregular transfers. A lender can only assess what it can see: if part of your pay is cash that never reaches your account, it will not appear on a statement. Ask the lender what else it accepts before you apply.
If your income is a grant, a pension or no work at all, the question is different: see grant income and SASSA loans, and if you are studying, student loans in South Africa.
Creditbar asks for 3 months of statements and a regular source of income, and lists no payslip: its card shows amounts from R500 to R5 000, terms of 7 to 61 days and the full requirements.

Compare loans before you apply
Compare three things: the total you repay in rand, the term and the documents you can supply. Three lenders to start with, in the default order of our list (not a quality ranking):
- Creditbar: R500 to R5 000 for 7 to 61 days; asks for 3 months of bank statements and a regular source of income.
- Crediwise: up to R8 000; asks for your latest 3 months’ bank statements.
- LendPlus: up to R4 000; asks for your latest 3 months’ bank statements.
Terms are from the lenders’ websites, 18 and 19 Oct 2026. Applying costs nothing and happens on the lender’s own website. Before you accept, the lender must give you a pre-agreement statement and quotation with the total you will repay (section 92).

What it costs: R2 000 for 3 months on a bank-statement assessment
Century publishes its charges (creditza.co.za, checked 18 Oct 2026) and asks for bank statements, so it is the one lender on our list where the price of a statement-based loan can be calculated. Example for a new client who borrows R2 000 and repays in 3 equal monthly instalments. Method: the initiation fee is added to the loan, interest of 0.16% a day is taken as about 4.8% a month on the reducing balance, and the service fee is paid every month. These are indicative sums, not a quote.
| R2 000 over 3 months | Amount |
|---|---|
| Initiation fee: R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1 000 | R265 |
| Interest over 3 months on R2 265 | about R221 |
| Service fee: 3 × R69 | R207 |
| Total to repay, before VAT on the initiation fee | about R2 693 |
| Per month | about R898 |
VAT on the initiation fee adds about R40, so the total is close to R2 733. Fees and interest come to roughly R693 to R733, or 35% to 37% of what you borrowed. Century lists 0.1% a day for repeat clients: the interest would be about R137 and the total about R2 609. The Regulations cap interest on short-term credit at 5% a month on the first loan and 3% a month on later loans in a calendar year (regulation 42); 0.16% and 0.1% a day are about 4.8% and 3% a month. The initiation fee is capped at R1 050 before VAT. Century’s own pages give different values for the term and rate in places, so rely on the figures in your pre-agreement statement. The example was calculated on Century’s conditions on 20 Oct 2026.
The example uses Century’s published fees from 18 Oct 2026: open its card to see the fee structure, the term and the documents it asks for.
How to prepare your documents
The five cards list the same core set: a valid South African ID, the last 3 months of bank statements and a cellphone number. Primeloans also asks for proof of residence and a payslip, and Century wants your bank account details. Get the statements from your bank for the last three full months, as the bank issues them. Regulation 23A asks for authentic documents, and section 81 lets a lender rely on a complete defence against a reckless-credit claim where a failure to answer its questions fully and truthfully materially affected its assessment, so do not round income up or leave a debt out.
If your income changes from month to month, show all three months as they are: the lender must average at least three pay periods, so the average counts, not your best month. If you are a registered taxpayer, SARS lets you view your Notice of Assessment (ITA34) on eFiling: it shows whether you owe SARS money or have a refund for that tax year (SARS Correspondence, then Request Historic IT Notices). Whether a lender accepts it is the lender’s decision; regulation 23A names bank statements or financial statements for the self-employed.
Some online lenders collect the statements inside the application. FASTA asks for an SA ID number and a mobile number, and reads three months of statements by upload, internet banking, email or from your banking app; it accepts only bank-generated PDFs (FASTA FAQ, 28 Oct 2026).

Red flags: “no documents”, upfront fees and WhatsApp lenders
An ad that says you need no payslip and no questions will be asked describes a lender that is not doing the assessment the Act requires. Walk away if a “lender”:
- asks for a fee, “insurance” or a “release payment” before it pays out;
- promises a loan to everyone or says “guaranteed”;
- works only through WhatsApp or social media, with no company name or address;
- asks for your banking PIN, password or one-time PIN;
- is missing from the NCR register of credit providers.
Search the company name or registration number on ncr.org.za; each lender card here shows the NCR number and the date we checked it (7 Oct 2026). Anyone can file a complaint about a credit provider with the National Credit Regulator (section 136). If a bad record worries you, read loans for blacklisted people first.

FAQ
Which lenders in South Africa give loans without a payslip?
Century, Creditbar, Crediwise and LendPlus list your last 3 months of bank statements and no payslip on their cards (18 Oct 2026); Primeloans asks for statements and a payslip. None of them names self-employed or cash income, so ask the lender what it accepts. Each lender decides after its own assessment, and none can promise approval.
Can I get a loan with only bank statements?
Yes, at four of the five lenders in the table above: Century, Creditbar, Crediwise and LendPlus ask for your last 3 months of bank statements and no payslip, and Primeloans asks for statements plus a payslip. For people without a payslip, regulation 23A of the National Credit Regulations names bank statements as a way to validate income. See the credit score guide for what else lenders read.
Can self-employed people get a loan without a payslip?
Sometimes. Regulation 23A lets a lender validate a self-employed person’s income with 3 months of bank statements or the latest financial statements. None of our five cards names the self-employed, so ask the lender first. Larger and longer loans are covered in the personal loans guide.
Can I get a loan without a payslip in South Africa?
It can be possible, but your income is proved another way. Century, Creditbar, Crediwise and LendPlus list your last 3 months of bank statements and no payslip; Primeloans asks for statements and a payslip (cards, 18 Oct 2026). The lender decides after its own assessment, and none can promise approval.
Are loans without a payslip more expensive?
The Regulations set the same maximum interest and fees whatever proof of income you give, and a lender may charge less. On Century’s published fees, R2 000 over 3 months costs roughly R693 to R733 in fees and interest (20 Oct 2026). Compare the total on each quotation.
What if I earn cash?
A lender can only assess what it can see, and cash that never reaches your account does not show on a statement. None of the five cards describes cash income. Ask the lender what it accepts before you apply, and avoid anyone who says no proof is needed.
Important information
A payslip is one way to prove income, not the only one. The National Credit Regulations name bank statements as the alternative, for salaried people and for the self-employed or informally employed. Of the five lenders on our list, four ask for your last 3 months of bank statements and do not list a payslip; Primeloans asks for a payslip as well (checked 18 and 19 Oct 2026).
Why lenders ask for a payslip and what they accept instead. Section 81 of the National Credit Act says a credit provider must not sign a credit agreement without first taking reasonable steps to assess your existing financial means, prospects and obligations, and that you must answer its questions fully and truthfully.
