What “blacklisted” actually means in South Africa
There is no single list that puts your name on a ban. “Blacklisted” is everyday language for negative information on your credit record. The record is kept by credit bureaus registered under the National Credit Act: Experian, TransUnion, XDS and Consumer Profile Bureau (the NCR lists all four). Lenders look at it, and each lender decides what it will accept; the loans list shows how their requirements differ.
What can appear on a record:
- missed or late payments and accounts marked in default;
- court judgments;
- debt review status.
A low credit score is not the same thing. A score is one number that summarises your record; the bands at each bureau are in what is a good credit score. A listing is a specific entry, such as a judgment or a default. You can have a low score and no listing, or a listing and a score that is still usable, and lenders weigh both together with your income.

How lenders assess you: the affordability check
Under the National Credit Act (sections 80 and 81) a lender must take reasonable steps to check that you can afford the loan before it signs an agreement.
In practice the check has three parts.
- Identity and income. The lenders on our list usually ask for your South African ID, the last three months of bank statements and a cellphone number. Primeloans also asks for a payslip and proof of residence.
- Your obligations. Debit orders and other loans on the statements show how much of your income is already spoken for.
- Your credit record. Most lenders run it. Creditbar says bad credit does not automatically disqualify you and that a credit check is part of its assessment (checked 11 Oct 2026). Other lenders set stricter rules: some say they don’t accept applicants who are currently in arrears, so read each lender’s requirements before you apply.
If you do not know what your record shows, start with our guide on how to check your credit score.
Have your ID, bank statements and cellphone number ready, then compare lenders on the online loans list.

Each lender on the list has its own criteria, so a no from one is not a no from all. Three to start with, all NCR registered (register check 7 Oct 2026):
- Creditbar: up to R5 000 for 7 to 61 days, DebiCheck debit order or manual EFT.
- Crediwise: up to R8 000, can pay to an eWallet instantly on any day (lender’s own statement).
- Century: up to R8 000 for up to 180 days, with initiation fee, service fee and daily interest published on its site.
Applying costs nothing and takes place on the lender’s own website. Read the pre-agreement statement before you accept.

Payday, cash, micro and online loans if you are blacklisted
“Blacklisted” loans are sold under four names. They are not four different legal products: all four are credit agreements under the National Credit Act and each lender assesses affordability. On our list the amounts run from R500 up to R8 000, and the longest term is 6 months.
| Name | What it usually means | Amount and term on our list | What a lender looks at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payday loan | Short-term loan to bridge the days until your next salary; Creditbar describes its product as exactly that | Up to the short-term ceiling of R8 000, repaid within six months; Creditbar: 7 to 61 days | Income on your statements, existing debit orders, the credit record |
| Cash loan | Plain-language name for a personal loan paid out in cash or to your bank account, from days to years | Short-term credit as above; bank and larger credit-provider loans run for months or years | Affordability first; banks read the record more strictly |
| Micro loan | A small loan from a microlender; the same short-term credit category | R500 upwards on our list, within the R8 000 short-term limit | Statements, ID, phone number |
| Online loan | Applied for and signed on the lender’s site; documents are uploaded | Kredio: R500 to R8 000, decision within 15 minutes (its website, 27 Oct 2026) | Automated credit and affordability assessment, per Kredio |
The name says nothing about whether your record will pass. The lender’s own rules do. Kredio and Creditbar say that a low score does not automatically disqualify an applicant; for the other lenders on the list we found no statement either way.
Compare the total repayable, not the label: see amounts, fees and NCR numbers side by side.

JabulaniMoney
R10 000 to R30 000 with a poor record
A loan of R10 000 to R30 000 is above the R8 000 short-term limit, so it is an ordinary personal loan, usually repaid over months or years. Most online lenders on our list stop at R8 000. Amounts of this size come from banks and larger credit providers, which tend to read the record more strictly. What their cards show (checked 7 Oct 2026):
- Finbond: R500 to R25 000, up to 24 months; asks for a certified ID, three months of payslips and statements and proof of address.
- Capfin (PEP and Ackermans stores): R1 000 to R50 000 over 6 to 24 months. Capfin’s FAQ says its affordability assessment considers your income and expenses, your credit profile and your payment behaviour (27 Oct 2026).
- African Bank: the card lists no amount range or rule for listed applicants, and the bank’s website did not open for our automated check on 27 Oct 2026. Ask the bank.
Some lenders say outright that they look for a clean record: DirectAxis, for example, lists a “good credit record” among its requirements. None of these promises a yes. If a lender asks for a payment before it lends, walk away.
Check each lender’s requirements first, then compare the total repayable on the online loans list.
Which loans are realistic with a poor record
The table shows the main product types and where the risk sits. It names no lenders and promises nothing: availability depends on the lender and your affordability check.
| Product | Typical term | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term loan | Days to a few months (lenders on our list: R500 to R8 000, 7 to 180 days where published) | Highest cost per rand borrowed. Initiation and monthly fees weigh most on small, short loans. A missed debit order adds default charges. |
| Personal loan from a bank or credit provider | Months to several years | Stricter record checks and larger amounts. |
| Secured loan (against a vehicle or other asset) | Months to years | The lender can take the asset if you default. |
| Debt consolidation loan | Months to years | Only helps if the total you repay falls. Spreading the same debt over a longer term can cost more. |
If several debts are the problem, a new loan may not be the answer: see debt review in the last section and debt consolidation loans. If your problem is a low score rather than a listing, read bad credit, not blacklisted.
For a smaller amount over a short term, start with the lenders on the online loans list and compare the total cost.
What a short-term loan costs: a worked example
The cost of credit is interest, an initiation fee, a monthly service fee and, if you take it, credit life insurance. The National Credit Regulations cap interest and fees, and the lender must give you a pre-agreement statement with the total before you sign.
Example on Century’s published figures (creditza.co.za, checked 11 Oct 2026): initiation fee of 16.5% of the first R1 000 plus 10% above R1 000 (capped at 15% of the loan), service fee R69 per month, interest 0.16% per day for new clients. These are indicative sums for a R2 000 loan, before any VAT, not a quote.
| 30 days | 180 days | |
|---|---|---|
| Initiation fee | R265 | R265 |
| Interest (0.16% per day, on the full R2 000) | R96 | R576 |
| Service fees (R69 per month) | R69 | R414 |
| Total to repay | about R2 430 | up to about R3 255 |
The longer loan costs far more in total, even if each instalment looks smaller. Repaid in instalments, interest on the 180-day loan falls with the balance, so the real figure is lower, but the monthly fee keeps adding up. Choose the shortest term your budget can carry, and compare the total on the pre-agreement statement, not the interest rate alone.
Check the total to repay for your own term on the online loans list before you apply.
Red flags: how to spot a loan you should walk away from
- No NCR number. Every credit provider must be registered, and a registered lender has an NCRCP number. Search its legal name (in the terms and conditions or the page footer) in the register of credit providers on the National Credit Regulator’s website. The register lists legal names, so a brand can appear under another name. Every lender on our loans list carries an NCRCP number with the check date on their page.
- A yes before any check. A lender that promises you the money before it looks at your income skips the affordability assessment the law requires.
- A fee before the loan. Costs belong in the pre-agreement statement and are taken from the loan or your repayments. Money requested first to “release”, “insure” or “unlock” the loan is how advance-fee scams work.
- Paid blacklist removal. Nobody can buy you a clean record. A bureau corrects wrong entries and removes records when the Regulations require it. Treat any company that sells to “clear” your listing with suspicion.
- Requests for your banking PIN or OTP.
If you meet one of these, you can report it to the National Credit Regulator.
To avoid all of these, compare only lenders with an NCR number shown on the online loans list.
How to improve your record from here
- Get your free report. You are entitled to a free credit report once a year from each registered bureau (National Credit Act, section 72). A second report within 12 months may cost a small fee, so ask all four bureaus once a year.
- Look for errors. Wrong balances, accounts that are not yours and paid items still shown as unpaid can be disputed with the bureau that issued the report.
- Settle or restructure what is real. Contact the credit provider and agree a payment arrangement. Once an item is paid, ask the bureau how it will show on your record.
- Consider debt review. If you are over-indebted, an NCR-registered debt counsellor can apply on your behalf. While you are under review you cannot take new credit, and the status shows on your record.
- Let old listings expire. Bureaus may show adverse entries only for limited periods that depend on the type of entry. Ask the bureau or check the NCR website.
- Pay on time from now on. New on-time payments are what lenders see next.
For the step-by-step on reading a report, see how to check your credit score. When you are ready to borrow, go back to the list of lenders and compare total cost first.

Blacklisted and under debt review
Debt review is a legal process, and it changes what you can do. From the day you apply, the Act bars new credit agreements, except a consolidation agreement, until the review ends, so a lender that offers you a normal loan during review is a warning sign. You can borrow again once the debt counsellor issues a clearance certificate; bureaus must then remove the debt-review record.

FAQ
Can I get a loan if I am blacklisted in South Africa?
Sometimes. A listing does not ban you, but a registered lender must check affordability and most also check your record. Creditbar says a lower credit score does not automatically disqualify an applicant (its FAQ, 29 Oct 2026), and JabulaniMoney runs credit checks but gives high priority to your current affordability (its FAQ, 29 Oct 2026). Kredio makes a similar statement (its website, 27 Oct 2026). Other lenders set stricter rules, and none promises approval. Read each lender’s requirements on the loans list first.
Which lenders give loans to blacklisted people in South Africa?
None promises a loan to blacklisted applicants. Creditbar says a lower credit score does not automatically disqualify an applicant, and JabulaniMoney says it gives high priority to your current affordability. Kredio makes a similar statement. For Crediwise, Century and the other lenders on our list we found no statement either way, so read their requirements before you apply. Each lender assesses affordability and decides on its own. Compare them on the loans list.
Do banks lend to blacklisted people?
Banks apply the same affordability rules and set their own credit policy, and many are strict about defaults and judgments. Smaller credit providers set other criteria, so the same record can get different answers.
Can I get a loan with no credit check?
Not from a registered lender. Sections 80 and 81 of the National Credit Act require an affordability assessment, and that usually includes a credit check. An offer of “no credit check” is a reason to look the lender up in the NCR register before you share any documents. What registered lenders check instead is in no credit check loans.
How long does a negative listing stay on my record?
It depends on the type of entry. The National Credit Regulations set limited periods for how long a bureau may show each kind of entry, such as adverse classifications and judgments. Get your free report to see what is on yours, and confirm the current rules on the NCR website or with the bureau.
Is a payday loan a good option?
Only as a last resort and only for a short gap you can repay in full. It is the most expensive way to borrow per rand, and a missed debit order adds default charges and can be reported to the bureaus. Check the total on the pre-agreement statement, and try an arrangement with the creditor first.
Does PEP (Capfin), African Bank or Finbond lend to blacklisted people?
None of the three publishes a rule for listed applicants that we could find on 27 Oct 2026. Capfin says its affordability assessment considers your income and expenses, your credit profile and your payment behaviour, and that you may reapply 30 days after a decline. Finbond lists the documents it asks for and no credit rule. African Bank publishes none on our card and its site did not open for our check. A listing does not ban you, but each of them assesses affordability and the record, so ask before you apply.
Important information
Each lender on our online loans list sets its own rules, and some say they assess each application case by case. A registered lender must check that you can afford the loan, so no lender can promise a yes in advance. Compare the NCR registration where shown. Cost figures as at 17 Oct 2026.
South Africa has no official blacklist: lenders look at the record kept by the credit bureaus.
