Loan apps in South Africa: which lenders have one and how they work

Tasamira editorial team · data checked on 30 Oct 2026

Among the online lenders on our list, LendPlus and Primeloans have an app on Android and iPhone, and Creditbar has an Android app as well as its website (Google Play, 29 Oct 2026); Kredio and Cashgist work in the browser. Crediwise and Century list no store app on our cards, and you apply on their websites. Creditbar has an Android app on Google Play (checked 29 Oct 2026); on an iPhone you apply on its website. If the app is missing for the lender you want, the website does the same job. Finbond Mutual Bank links its Google Play and App Store listings from finbondmutualbank.co.za (28 Oct 2026).

Compare before you install: the online loans list shows amounts, terms and documents with the source and date.

App or website: what changes

The loan is the same. The legal side does not change with the screen: the lender has to be registered, assess affordability and give you a pre-agreement statement and quotation before you sign. What changes is convenience.

  • An app keeps you logged in, sends reminders of the due date and shows the settlement amount without a call. It also asks for permissions on your phone and takes space.
  • A website needs no install, works on any phone or computer, and gives the lender fewer permissions to ask for. Creditbar, for example, says its website is fully mobile-friendly, so you can apply from any smartphone, tablet or computer, and that the bank statement is uploaded automatically (its FAQ, 29 Oct 2026).

Whichever you choose, approve the DebiCheck debit order in your own banking app and read the quotation. If you are comparing a bank’s app with an online lender’s, compare the total repayable in rand, not the screen.

What you need to apply in an app

An app asks for what a website asks for. From our cards:

  • Online lenders: a valid South African ID, the last three months of bank statements, a working cellphone number, a bank account. Primeloans adds a payslip and proof of residence. Kredio also asks for proof of steady income.
  • Bank apps: usually proof of income and often proof of address. Nedbank’s Quick Loan needs no documents uploaded, but you must be a South African citizen aged 18 to 65 with income paid electronically.

Your phone must receive SMS. Statements are the item that slows most applications down: download them from your banking app or let the lender fetch them for the banks it lists.

How fast app loans pay out

An app does not make the money arrive faster. What speeds it up is the lender’s process. What the lenders state: LendPlus says review and transfer take from 15 minutes, 24/7. Crediwise and Primeloans say 15 minutes to 2 hours during business hours; Cashgist says approval takes 15 minutes and payout 15 minutes to 2 hours during business hours. Nedbank says the money from a personal loan could be in your account 3 to 90 minutes after you accept the offer, and the next working day for an evening application. Kredio says it decides within 15 minutes, 24/7, and the money is in your account within 15 minutes after you sign.

Four of the lenders, LendPlus, Crediwise, Primeloans and Cashgist, also state an eWallet payout that is instant on any day, explained in eWallet loans. These are the lenders’ own statements, not a promise for your application.

The same split between decision and payout is explained in the guide to how fast instant loans really pay out.

Repaying in an app

The app is also where you repay, so check what each lender offers before you borrow. From the cards and sites:

  • Crediwise: DebiCheck, Capitec Pay, EFT, Ozow, Pay@ stores, card, Google Pay and Apple Pay.
  • LendPlus: a postponement if you apply in your account up to two days before the due date, by paying the interest and fees accrued and signing a new agreement.
  • Primeloans: prolongation is possible by paying the interest.
  • Creditbar: DebiCheck or manual EFT, with early repayment without penalties.
  • Cashgist: DebiCheck debit order on the due date, or a manual payment by Ozow from your account; early settlement without penalty.
  • Kredio: a DebiCheck debit order you approve once, or a manual payment by EFT, Ozow, Capitec Pay or card through a link in your account; early settlement is possible, and you ask for the settlement amount at least 3 working days before the due date.

A postponement or prolongation is a new agreement with its own costs, so ask for the new total in writing before you accept. A missed debit order can bring late fees and a record at the bureaus.

App permissions and fake loan apps

Loan apps are also where fake lenders hide. Three checks before you install anything:

  1. Find the NCR number. A registered lender shows an NCRCP number that you can look up in the NCR register of credit providers. If it gives none, stop. How to tell a loan shark from a registered lender.
  2. Read the permissions. A lender does not need your contacts, photos or messages to decide whether you can afford a loan. Google Play’s Financial Services policy (read 27 Oct 2026) says personal loan apps may not access sensitive data such as photos and contacts, and requires them to disclose the minimum and maximum repayment period, the maximum annual percentage rate, a representative example of the total cost and a privacy policy. An app that asks for more is a reason to leave.
  3. Never pay to release a loan. The National Credit Regulator says the Act does not allow a lender to ask for an upfront payment before it pays out.

Install only the app the lender links from its own website or that you find under the exact company name in the store, and compare the company name with the register.

What a small app loan costs

LendPlus lends from R500 to R4 000 and does not publish its rate, term or fees (site checked 22 Oct 2026, card 25 Oct 2026), so this example uses the legal ceiling for short-term credit. The initiation fee is at the legal maximum, added to the loan; interest is on the reducing balance; the service fee is R60 a month. Before VAT; indicative, not a LendPlus quote.

R2 0001 month at 5% (first loan)1 month at 3% (later loan)2 months at 5%

Service feesR60R60R120
Total to repayR2 438R2 393R2 556
Per monthR2 438R2 393R1 278

On a one-month R2 000 loan the fixed fees are R325 (R265 initiation fee plus R60 service fee), whatever the rate. Compare the quotation in the app with these figures: it may be lower, and it may not be higher. Check the amounts and terms on the LendPlus page before you start.

The guide to small cash loans compared sets these app loans next to other short-term options and the law that caps their cost.

FAQ

Which loan app gives instant money?

No app can promise it, because the lender assesses affordability first. LendPlus says review and transfer take from 15 minutes, 24/7 (its website). Those are the lenders’ statements, not a promise for your application. Compare them on the loans list.

Are loan apps in South Africa safe?

The ones from registered lenders are legal. Check the NCRCP number in the NCR register, read the permissions the app asks for, and never pay a fee before the money arrives. Google Play’s policy bars personal loan apps from accessing photos and contacts. Registration is the first test; the permissions are the second.

Can I get a loan app without a payslip?

Among the online lenders on our list only Primeloans lists a payslip. The others ask for bank statements, and Kredio for proof of steady income. Nedbank’s Quick Loan needs no documents uploaded. See loans without a payslip for what each lender accepts.

Do loan apps check my credit?

Registered lenders must assess affordability, and most look at your credit record as part of it. Creditbar says a credit check is part of its assessment and Kredio says every application goes through an automated credit and affordability assessment. An application can leave an enquiry that stays on your record for up to a year.

Important information

App availability is taken from the store links on each lender’s card (checked 7 Oct and 25 Oct 2026). Google Play’s Financial Services policy was read on 27 Oct 2026; its personal-loan rules change. The cost example is a ceiling calculation under regulation 42 (5% a month on a first short-term loan, 3% on later loans in the same calendar year), regulation 43 and regulation 44, not a LendPlus quote. Kredio, Cashgist, Nedbank and Capitec details were read on their own sites on 27 Oct 2026, except where marked “not published on our card”.

  • Kredio: terms from the lender’s website, as of 27 Oct 2026
